“I’m feeling lost”, “I don’t know what I want to do in life”, “Passions? I forgot about them when I grew up”..
Sounds familiar? I don’t know how many times I’ve discussed these types of questions with my friends. I was about to write about another topic today when I received an email from a friend in Sweden related to these questions, so I decided to talk about that instead. In today’s world, so many people feel disconnected to themselves. They don’t know what to do in life, which country to live in, whether or not they want to stay together with their current boyfriend/ girlfriend etc. It’s like we get caught up in a fog and can’t see clearly, so we don’t know which way to go. Many of us have been told that getting a good education will help us get a good job, a good job will give us a high salary so that we can live a good life and Be Happy. Being happy is what we all want, right? Some people “have it all”: a great job, a loving partner, an amazing apartment, a high salary, they’re healthy – but yet not fully satisfied. These are all amazing things but the problem is that they’re all external. Where’s YOU in that picture?
Whether we admit it or not, we are spiritual creatures. We’re not robots that are programmed to be perfect at our jobs, perfect in our relationships, perfect in social encounters etc. We’re not meant to be that way. Yet, that’s what many companies are asking of their employes today, but that’s another topic.. When I say that we’re spiritual, I mean that we have a fundamental need for a connection to our inner self. We can’t just focus on the external parts and not have the internal pieces in place. This is where we find true and lasting happiness, a security that no external circumstance can disorder and clear directions for where we’re heading. Our inner guidance system, our feelings, will always tell us what’s wrong and what’s right. It’s as simple as that. Sometimes what’s right isn’t what we thought it would be. I always imagined myself being a career woman in a big international company. After 3,5 years of working in one, I know that this for sure isn’t the right place for me. It wasn’t my calling. If you don’t know your calling, do what you can to find out. Write things down that makes you passionate, ask your parents what made you happy when you were younger, try new things, talk to people you normally wouldn’t talk to. Make it a priority to understand what captivates you and makes you feel passionate. If you removed money and fear out of the picture, what would you do? Where would you go?
The universe wants you to find your calling, so when you start searching the most unexpected things can happen – magical things. This I know for sure.
“There is no greater gift you can give or receive than to honor your calling. It’s why you were born. And how you become most truly alive.” – Oprah
“If you ask me what I came to do in this world, I, an artist, will answer you: I am here to live out loud.” – Émile Zola
“Live your beliefs and you can turn the world around.” – Henry David Thoreau
