Being present in the Now

If you haven’t read the book “The power of Now” with Eckhart Tolle, I’d strongly recommend you do. A friend gave it to me, saying that it comes into your life when you’re ready for it. Today I almost never worry anymore, I’m much more at peace and have a stronger connection to my inner-self. Why? I realized from reading the book that the now, the present moment, is all there really is and ever will be. Have you ever experienced anything except for in the now? When you think about your past, you re-create feelings in the now. When the future is actually happening, it’s happening in the now. The more you focus on the past and future, the more you miss out of the most important thing we have – the now. Time isn’t what’s precious, the now is. Feelings such as worry, anxiety and stress comes from the futures, while regret, guilt and sadness comes from the past. For example, worrying about missing a flight pretends to be necessary, but it doesn’t really serve a useful purpose. Just plan for what’s necessary, in this case what time you have to leave your house in order to make the flight, then be in the present.

Think about where you are right now. What do you see around you? What can you smell? What do you feel? What can you hear? Just observe what is and surrender to this very moment. Now, do you have any problems? I remember reading this book when I had a lot of pain from the breakup with my ex boyfriend. It got to the point where I was panicking about my decision of breaking up. But then I thought – am I really unhappy about this right now? I realized the answer was no. I was more than ok, I was feeling pretty good actually. Even today when I’m crazy hungover from way too much rose wine last night, I’m ok. Basically, you cannot both be unhappy and present in the now.
